CBD, or cannabidiol if you want to get fancy, is one of the naturally occurring phytocannabinoids found in the hemp plant.
Phytocanna-who, you say?! Here is a breakdown…
A Phytocannabinoid is a molecule that is synthesized by a plant.
“Phyto” means plant and to synthesize is to make (something) by synthesis, especially chemically.
Phytocannabinoinds are not only found in hemp, but many other plants that you frequently eat, such as black pepper, broccoli, and carrots. Interestingly, our bodies make their own cannabinoids too.
Science has found 113 known phtyocannabinoids in the cannabis plant, one of the most prominent of which is CBD.
CBD acts upon the body’s endocanaboinoid system (ECS), which is a complex network of receptors throughout our entire body that helps coordinate messages between the brain, body, and nervous system.
The ECS is related to the regulation of sleep, hunger, endocrine function and homeostasis, the overall balance of the human body. The endocannabinoid system has been recognized as an important regulatory system in the function of brain, endocrine, and immune tissues.
There have been clinical research studies of CBD regarding anxiety, neurological cognition, inflammation, and pain. Ongoing studies are demonstrating that CBD has therapeutic effects.
